The Vital Mind project intends to use a combination of cognitive psychology, the television medium and advanced interactive Information Computer Technology (ICT) to enable older people to actively participate in mind fitness exercises while they are sitting in front of their TV set.
The main objectives of Vital Mind project were: 1. Design and developing interactive TV applications to enhance the basic elements of cognition and also improve quality of living for both healthy and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) older people. Also, developing interactive activities of games (without cognitive elements) for older people specifically design to television. 2. Developing new methods for user’s control by detection of hands movement using pointing and/or gyro. 3. Developing new methods for user’s control by detection of non-speech vocal commands. 4. Producing Cognitive and Users Generated Content Production Tools for iDTV STB (Linux and Flash Lite). 5. Developing the use of USB Flash Device-UFD (Disk on Key) as an addition or alternative to broadcast delivery system and 6. Performance of Cognitive Hypothesis Verification - Verifying whether the newly developed technologies are capable of maintaining or enhancing cognitive ability.

A major dissemination event was held at Goldsmiths, University of London, to present Vital Mind to a range of industry stakeholders as well as researchers in the field of ICT and ageing. The one-day workshop was jointly organised by the VM and Hermes Consortiums to present both these projects and explore the state of the art in cognitive support technology for older people. During the workshop, guests and invited speakers discussed how technology can help the elderly to preserve their quality of life, describing work which several research groups have done and are doing in the area of cognitive training and assisting technologies and outlining some of the challenges that lie ahead. The goal was to share best practice and to generate new conceptual frameworks for how to advance, promote and spread assisting technology research for older people. A Vital Mind demo was presented and received positive feedback. Overall, the Workshop was a valuable event for the VM Project and was attended by about 40 participants, including representatives from academia, research organisations, communications industries, older people associations, and other projects in e-Inclusion, AAL & ICT PSP projects partners.
